VALDERS – Auburndale sophomore Sloan Welch earned a spot at next week’s state meet with a second-place finish at the WIAA Division 3 individual wrestling sectional Saturday at Valders High School.
Welch finished second at 182 pounds to earn a spot at the 2021 WIAA Division 3 State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 13 at Wausau West High School.
Welch (13-6) lost in the 182-pound final to Ben Strehlow of Weyauwega-Fremont, 11-3, before coming back to win a second-place wrestleback over Hunter Schuh of Shiocton, 3-0, to cement his spot at state.
Auburndale’s other two sectional qualifiers finished fourth.
Noah Altmann (13-4) and Brice Thiel (12-6), both juniors, ended their seasons for Auburndale.
