Edgar High School girls basketball player Makenna Guden has been voted as the MarshfieldAreaSports.com & Zaleski Sports January High School Athlete of the Month.
The High School Athlete of the Month Award main sponsor for the 2020-21 school year is Awards ‘n’ More of Wisconsin Rapids. The monthly award will continue through June 2021, and the winner of the MarshfieldAreaSports.com & Zaleski Sports High School Athlete of the Year will be announced in July.
Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Assumption, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Mosinee, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pacelli, Pittsville, Spencer, Stevens Point, Stratford, Thorp and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln.
Guden earned about 40 percent of the 6,300 votes cast during voting from Feb. 2-8 at MarshfieldAreaSports.com.
Other nominees for the January award were: Stratford girls basketball player Breanna Ackley, Athens boys basketball player Cooper Diedrich, Marshfield boys swimming Myles Jensen, Columbus Catholic boys basketball player Jadon Nienast, and Stevens Point Pacelli boys basketball player Weston Peplinski.
Guden, a senior guard and University of Wisconsin-Superior recruit, broke the all-time scoring record at Edgar on Jan. 8 with 17 points against Athens. She has scored in a double figures in all 16 games through Jan. 19 for the Wildcats, including a season-high 28 in a win over Marathon, which included four 3-pointers. She also had 25 points against Marathon on Jan. 19. Guden headed into February averaging 19.7 points per game this season, reaching the 1,400-point plateau for her career in late January.

Guden joins Marshfield Columbus Catholic soccer player Alex Edwards (September), Marshfield girls swimmer Faith Risa (October), Marshfield football player Wyatt LeMoine (November), and Mosinee girls basketball player Alexis Frieboth (December) as winners of the award during the 2020-21 school year.
