AUBURNDALE – Schuyler Gilhausen plated Hunter Wright with the game’s only run in the fourth inning as the Auburndale baseball team slipped past Athens 1-0 in a nonconference game to open the 2021 season Tuesday at Auburndale High School.

Wright singled with one out in the fourth, stole second and scored on Gilhausen’s single. That was it for the offense on either team as Wright did the rest on the mound.

The senior pitcher for Auburndale threw a complete-game shutout, scattering eight hits while striking out seven with no walks.

Athens had runners in scoring position in the first, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings only to see Wright wiggle out of trouble.

Dayne Diethelm took the hard-luck loss for Athens, striking out seven in five innings.

Auburndale will play at Abbotsford on Thursday.
