Marshfield softball splits twinbill with D.C. Everest in Madison Field debut

MARSHFIELD – The long-awaited opening of Madison Field, the new home to the Marshfield High School softball team, took place Wednesday as the Tigers split a Wisconsin Valley Conference doubleheader with D.C. Everest.

Madalen Bornbach hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Marshfield to a 7-5 win in the opener before D.C. Everest came back to post a 9-3 victory in Game 2 to earn the split.

Courtney Donahue had a bases-loaded single with two outs in the first inning to give Marshfield a quick 2-0 lead in Game 1.

D.C. Everest’s Calista Fuehrer hit a solo home run in the second, but the Tigers responded with two runs in the second on Brianna Jakobi’s single and an error in the left field.

Haylee Schmidt pounded solo homers in the fourth and sixth innings, and Everest scored two more runs later in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.

Taylor Barwick led off the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff double and scored on an error to tie the game for Marshfield. After a scoreless eighth and top of the ninth, Brianna Jakobi led off the bottom of the ninth with a single for the Tigers, and after a groundout, Bornbach smacked a two-run homer to win it.

In Game 2, D.C. Everest scored twice in the first inning on an error and RBI triple by Paige Kislow, then took command with a seven-run third inning.

The Evergreens sent 11 batters to the plate, with Kislow smacking a two-run homer and McKenna Hammond connecting on a two-RBI double.

Bornbach had a two-run double in the fourth inning and Brianna Jakobi had an RBI single in the sixth for Marshfield’s scoring.

Both teams will return to action Saturday. D.C. Everest will play at a quadrangular tournament at Hudson, while Marshfield will play a doubleheader at Holmen.
