STEVENS POINT – Kate Schiling and Sophia Gruenling scored goals in the final 30 minutes to lift the Marshfield girls soccer team to a 3-1 win over Stevens Point in the season opener for both teams Tuesday at Portage County Youth Soccer Complex.

Schilling had the lone goal in the first half as Marshfield went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

After Amara Porter tied it 9½ minutes into the second half for Stevens Point, Gruenling scored six minutes later and Schilling added her second goal with 9:18 to go to give the Tigers some cushion.

“We may have started a little jittery, but soon started connecting passes to get some great scoring opportunities,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “Kate is going to be one of the top scorers in the conference this year and had multiple scoring chances. The makeup of the youth and leadership of the seniors will gel and when it does look out.”

Lindner called out the play of Hayden Berger, Samantha Kilty, Abby Ongna, Ainsley Hall, Aly Dietsche, Savannah Braxton and Becca Lossman as key to the victory.

Marshfield will play its home opener at Heiting Community Stadium at 7 p.m. Thursday against Merrill.
