Huge first inning pushes Neillsville past Columbus Catholic softball

NEILLSVILLE – Neillsville scored 13 times in the opening inning and made quick work of Marshfield Columbus Catholic, winning 18-2 in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division opener for both teams on Tuesday at Neillsville High School.

After Columbus Catholic (0-2, 0-1 Cloverbelt East) scored twice in the opening inning, Neillsville exploded, scoring 13 times in the bottom of the frame and went on to the victory, which ended in three innings via the 15-run rule.

Bella Opelt had three hits and two RBIs, and scored three times, and King had a double, two RBIs and scored twice to lead the Neillsville (2-1, 1-0 Cloverbelt East) offense.

Both teams return to action Thursday with Cloverbelt East contests. Columbus Catholic will play its home opener against Gilman at the Marshfield Fairgrounds, while Neillsville travels to Owen-Withee.
