SCHOFIELD – D.C. Everest scored four goals in the opening half and held off a late Marshfield run to defeat the Tigers 5-3 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference girls soccer game Saturday at D.C. Everest Middle School.

Madison Sazama scored in the 12th minute and Jenna Baumann added three goals before halftime, pushing the Evergreens to a 4-0 lead.

Sophia Gruenling scored 2:44 into the second half to get Marshfield on the scoreboard. After Baumann scored again, on a penalty kick, Avery Weister scored twice off assists from Gruenling, to bring the Tigers to within 5-3 with 24 minutes remaining.

However, the Tigers could not get any closer as Everest (2-0 overall and Wisconsin Valley Conference) held on for the win.

“After two games of pretty much dominating teams, we saw what the top teams in the valley bring,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “DCE was quick, physical and took it to us.

“We need to lean the role is both ends and we all must mark and find opponents quicker. We will get there and this is a great learning experience for the team as we’ll adjust and learn from this and prepare for a tough week.”

Marshfield (2-1 overall and Wisconsin Valley Conference) will play at Wausau East on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
