MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield softball team knocked Wisconsin Rapids from the unbeaten ranks in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, splitting a doubleheader against the Raiders on Tuesday at Madison Field.
Marshfield hung on for a 3-2 win in the opener before Rapids turned the tables and won Game 2 12-5.
In Game 1, Marshfield struck early. Courtney Donahue singled and scored on a single by Madalen Bornbach, who advanced to third on a throwing error. Loryn Jakobi drove in Bornbach to give Marshfield a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Bornbach drove in another run in the third to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead, which held until the top of the seventh.
Donahue, who was dominant through six innings allowing just one hit, gave up a single to Allison Martin and a triple to opposing pitcher Rhiannon Carroll as the Raiders cut the deficit to 3-1.
Jess Dekarske followed with a groundout to plate Carroll before Donahue fanned the next two batters to finish off the victory. Donahue finished with 12 strikeouts.
Wisconsin Rapids scored four times in the bottom of the first inning before Marshfield clawed back to tie it in the fourth. But the Raiders scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth and added three more in the fifth, while keeping the Tigers scoreless during the final three innings.
Hailey Wagner had two triples and four RBIs, Megan Clary had three hits and scored three times, and Martin and Dekarske each drove in two runs for Wisconsin Rapids.
Marshfield (7-3, 4-2 WVC) will have a week off before playing at Wausau East for a WVC doubleheader on May 18. Wisconsin Rapids (7-3, 5-1 WVC) plays a nonconference game at Mosinee on Friday before traveling to Stevens Point for two on May 18.
