AUBURNDALE – Hunter Wright scattered six hits and struck out 11 without a walk in a complete-game effort to lead the Auburndale baseball team to a 5-0 win over Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Thursday at Auburndale High School.
Sloan Welch had RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings to lead the Eagles’ offense.
The game was scoreless until the fourth when Auburndale scored twice. The Eagles added three more in the fifth to give Wright more than enough run support.
Wright struck out the final four batters he faced to complete the shutout.
“I know Hunter Wright has been shooting strikes, so that’s important, and we need to just stay in that mentality to shooting strikes, but we still have to focus on cutting down our own strikeouts at the plate,” Auburndale coach Jay Anderson said. “We still have a tendency to let them mount a bit, so that’s going to be a focus, but it really is going to be on growth and fundamentals.”
Auburndale (6-5, 3-1 Marawood South) hosts Phillips for a nonconference game Friday. Assumption (2-6, 0-4 Marawood South) plays at home against Chequamegon.
“I thought we started a bit slow,” Anderson said. “To play them on Monday, and that was a concern of mine to come out with a five inning 10-0 win, I didn’t know if we would take them lightly, because I know that they’re a nice team. To get these two wins this week was really big. Our young guys, who we want to try to work on consistency, and to come here and play this way again, big game.”
