The Marshfield girls soccer team split a pair of Wisconsin Valley Conference games, losing 2-0 to Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday at Heiting Community Stadium before responding with a 4-1 win at Merrill on Friday.
Logan Vollert and Ella Bruns scored in the first 17 minutes of the second half to hand Wisconsin Rapids the win on Thursday.
Following a scoreless first half, which was largely spent with Wisconsin Rapids controlling the ball in Marshfield territory, the Raiders finally broke through when Vollert scored on an assist from Bruns 11:45 into the second half.
Bruns added a goal a little less than six minutes later and Marshfield could never get its offense untracked.
Rapids outshot Marshfield 16-6, with Marshfield goalie Clara Allar saving 13 saves.
“Ashley Abbott came into the game leading the WVC in scoring with 10 goals, and again (Marshfield’s) Abby Ongna came up huge taking one of the leading scorers out of the equation,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “Tonight, Rapids made better adjustments, but the beauty is this will make us better as players and coaches. Clara Allar was outstanding in goal with 13 saves, on a night special to her.”
On Friday, the Tigers traveled to Merrill and won 4-1.
Kate Schilling had a hat trick, and Courtney Meyer added a goal and an assist to Marshfield.
Schilling scored on an assist from Avery Weister and added another on a penalty kick in the closing minute of the first half, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead at intermission.
Schilling scored off an assist from Meyer 10 minutes into the second half and Meyer scored, with Hannah Halle assisting, less than three minutes later to push Marshfield’s lead to 4-0.
Merrill’s only goal came on a penalty kick in the 77th minute.
Marshfield is now 4-2 overall and in Wisconsin Valley Conference play.
“The penalty before half was huge as we were out of sync and that gave us some breathing room,” Lindner said. “The game was not pretty from our perspective but we’ll take the win and move forward to the toughest stretch of our schedule next week.”
The Tigers play at Wausau West on Tuesday, at home against D.C. Everest on Thursday, and Wausau East at home Saturday.
