Newman Catholic holds off late rally by Stratford softball

STRATFORD – A comeback attempt from the Stratford softball team fell a run short as the Tigers fell 5-4 to Wausau Newman Catholic in a Marawood Conference South Division game Tuesday at Hilgemann Field.

Newman Catholic (4-4, 2-3 Marawood South) scored two runs in both of the opening two innings to take a 4-1 lead.

Trailing 5-1, Stratford scored three times in the bottom of the sixth. Maria Schoenfuss delivered an RBI single, a groundout by Bailey Linzmaier plated Tessa Berg, and Schoenfuss scored on an error before Newman Catholic got out of the inning.

Newman pitcher Stevie Samuels tossed a three-up, three-down bottom of the seventh with a pair of strikeouts to finish off the victory.

The two teams will play again Thursday at Sunnyvale Park in Wausau.
