MARSHFIELD – Marshfield scored in the opening minute and that was all it would need as the Tigers went on to defeat Wausau East 3-0 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference girls soccer game Saturday at Heiting Community Stadium.
Sophia Gruenling scored for Marshfield off an assist from Hayden Berger just 29 seconds into the contest, and that 1-0 lead held until halftime.
Kate Schilling added a goal 2:17 into the second half, on an assist from Courtney Meyer, and Hannah Halle added a goal late to provide the final margin.
Clara Allar needed to make just one save in goal in the first half, and Ava Sainterme didn’t have to make any in the second half as Marshfield held an 18-1 shots on goal advantage.
“We talked about opening the lid to the goal as we were shut out the past two games, and wow, the ladies took this literally and put one in right out the gates,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “The defense picked up right where we left off vs. D.C. Everest and we got our first shutout of the season. Every defensive player contributed to the shutout, and it really starts with the forwards and midfielders, and then Abby Ongna.”
Marshfield (5-4 overall and Wisconsin Valley Conference) will play a nonconference game at Rhinelander at 7 p.m. Monday before hosting Stevens Point for a conference game Thursday at 7 p.m.
