Marshfield girls soccer shut out by Wisconsin Rapids

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Ashley Abbot had a pair of goals and Chelsea King saved the only two shots she saw in goal to push the Wisconsin Rapids girls soccer team to a 3-0 win over Marshfield in a Wisconsin Valley Conference matchup Tuesday at Washington Elementary School.

Ella Bruns scored in the fourth minute and Abbot tallied her first goal at the 37:59 mark to give Rapids a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Abbot scored again with 2:36 remaining in the game.

Marshfield was outshot 8-4 and fall to 7-6 overall and 6-5 in the WVC. Wisconsin Rapids improves to 10-1 overall and in the conference, maintain its lead in the Valley standings.

“Every night in the Valley is tough and we need to get after it at the opening whistle,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “The offense was shut down again by Rapids as they shut the Tigers out for a second time. It is frustrating for all and we’ll need to just work a little harder and step quicker to the ball.”

Marshfield finishes its regular season on Thursday at home against Wausau West. The game will start at 7 p.m. at Heiting Community Stadium and will be broadcast live at zaleskisports.com.

Wisconsin Rapids plays at D.C. Everest on Saturday. Everest (8-1 WVC) hosts winless Merrill on Thursday, setting up Saturday’s battle as a winner-take-all match for the conference title.
