EDGAR – The Auburndale and Edgar softball teams came into Friday’s Marawood Conference South Division doubleheader tied for second place in the standings, and the two teams left the field in the same position.
Edgar held off a late rally to defeated Auburndale 6-5 in the opening game, and Samantha Stanton had a two-run single in the second inning that held up in Game 2 for the Eagles as they turned the tables with a 2-1 win in the nightcap.
Both teams finish the Marawood South season with 7-3 records and finish in a tie for second place. Assumption won the conference title as it holds an 8-1 mark with one game remaining.
Edgar led 6-0 after six innings before Auburndale finally got its bats going in the seventh. It was too little, too late however, as the Eagles mustered five runs but couldn’t get the tying run across the plate.
Makayla Wirkus struck out 12 in a complete game for Edgar (13-6 overall), and also had three hits and scored three times. Skylee Manecke added two RBIs.
Ashlyn Grimm had a double and two RBIs in the seventh-inning rally for the Eagles (13-4 overall).
Hailey Grimm threw a complete game five-hitter in the second game for Auburndale, striking out three without a walk, riding Stanton’s two-run single in the second inning.
Auburndale plays nonconference games at Chequamegon on Saturday, at Mosinee on Monday at home against Neillsville on June 11 to end its regular season. Edgar will have a nonconference game at Neillsville on Monday to finish its regular-season schedule.
