MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic softball team got its bats going in the late innings, but Greenwood/Loyal countered every punch and held on for a 14-11 win in Claoverbelt Conference East Division game Monday at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.
Greenwood/Loyal led 6-1 after 4½ innings before both teams really heated up.
The Dons scored 10 runs in their final three at-bats, but couldn’t catch up as Greenwood/Loyal countered with five runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh.
Hailey Zimmermann went 5-for-5 with a double, a home run and five RBIs, and Alyssa Rueth had two doubles, a homer and five RBIs for the Dons, who are now 5-9 overall and 4-7 in the Cloverbelt East. The Dons finish their regular-season and conference schedule at Owen-Withee on Tuesday.
Kayle Brenner had three hits and four RBIs, and McKenna Schley and Mesa Rasmussen each drove in two runs for the Greenhounds (13-7, 10-2 Cloverbelt East).
