MARSHFIELD – Courtney Meyer and Kate Schilling scored in the opening 8½ minutes to set the pace early and the Marshfield girls soccer team went on to a 7-1 win over Portage/Poynette in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal Wednesday night at Heiting Community Stadium.

After Sydney Tobin scored for Portage/Poynette in the 15th minute, Marshfield pushed its lead to 4-1 by halftime after a goal by Abby Ongna and a P/P own goal.

Aly Dietsche, Meyer and Hannah Halle each had goals in the second half to finish off the scoring for the Tigers (8-7).

“We made some adjustments with our deep sweep to ensure we do not allow the opposition to get behind us and get a breakaway, and Serenity Paisley and Ainsley Hall are smart players and performed the role the way we like to see,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “In the second half, our seniors made sure the game would not get any closer. With all the hard work Aly and Abby Ongna put in, it was great to see them both get goals tonight and step up.”

No. 2 seed Marshfield will host No. 3 Rhinelander at 1 p.m. Saturday at Heiting Community Stadium. The Tigers defeated Rhinelander 2-1 on May 25 on a goal in the final minute by Meyer. Saturday’s game will be broadcast live at zaleskisports.com.
