EAU CLAIRE – The Marshfield boys tennis team’s season came to an end as its four qualifiers were eliminated at the WIAA Division 1 sectional on Thursday at the Menards Tennis Center.
Marshfield’s No. 1 singles player Ryan Paulman lost his opening match to Hudson’s Jacob Grosz 6-1, 6-0, and the No. 1 doubles team of Justin Rachu and Josh Grissman fell to Dom Henrickson and Cole Witucki of Menomonie, 6-2, 6-2.
Marshfield’s No. 2 singles player Sam Roherty and its No. 2 doubles team of Payton Smith and Kennan Chojnacki both went 1-1.
Roherty defeated Matt Davis of Stevens Point 6-0, 5-7, 10-3, and lost to Joey Leipnitz of Menomonie 6-4, 6-1.
Smith-Chojnacki defeated Joaquin Gamez and Kai Wei Chen of Menomonie 1-6, 6-3, 11-9, before losing to Jacob Hennemann and Ryan Arthur of Hudson 6-2, 6-2.
Eau Claire Memorial won the team title to advance to the WIAA Division 1 State Team Boys Tennis Tournament at the Menards Tennis Center on June 25-26. Memorial qualified for team state for the 14th-straight time.
The WIAA Division 1 State Individual Boys Tennis Tournament will be June 17-19 at the Menards Tennis Center as well.
Qualifying at No. 1 singles were Grosz, Ethan Beckermann of Memorial, Sean Martin of Chippewa Falls and Noah Hlavac of Stevens Point; at No. 2 singles was Evan Birkholz of Memorial; at No. 1 doubles are the teams of Luke Hinchcliffe and Colten Thielman of Stevens Point, Ryan Hayes and Tommy Peterson of Memoriall, Henrickson and Witucki of Menomonie, and Josh Solberg and Josh LeCuyer of Hudson; and at No. 2 doubles was Hennemann and Arthur of Hudson.
