MARSHFIELD – Marshfield Columbus Catholic scored a pair of runs on a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on to beat Pittsville 7-5 in a WIAA Division 4 baseball regional semifinal on Tuesday at Jack Hackman Field.
The Dons trailed 5-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth where Grant Olson delivered an RBI single to tie the game. An errant throw by the Pittsville pitcher on a pick-off attempt allowed two runs to score as Columbus took a 7-5 lead.
Blake Jakobi finished off the win with a scoreless seventh in a solid performance for the Dons.
After Jadon Nienast allowed three runs and three walks while retiring just one batter in the top of the first, Jakobi entered in relief and went the rest of the way. He gave up just two unearned runs and struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings of work.
Cy Becker and Emmitt Konieczny each had two hits and an RBI for the Dons (13-9).
Columbus Catholic moves on to a D-4 regional final at No. 1 seed Greenwood (14-6) on Wednesday. Pittsville finishes its season with a 10-9 record.
Wyatt Grimm had three hits and scored twice for Pittsville.
