BANGOR – Columbus Catholic scored eight times in the top of the fifth inning and the No. 5 seed Dons stunned No. 1 seed Bangor 10-7 to capture the WIAA Division 5 softball regional championship game on Wednesday.

This is the first ever trip to sectionals for Columbus softball.

The Dons (8-9) move on to a D-5 sectional semifinal at No. 2 seed Independence/Gilmanton (12-12) on Monday. Seneca (15-5) will play at De Soto (16-3) in the other sectional semifinal, with the winners clashing Wednesday, June 23, at Bangor for a state tournament berth. Bangor finishes the season 14-5.

Bangor led 4-2 going into the fifth when the Dons batted around and then some, plating eight runs to take command.

The Cardinals responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, added another in the seventh, but Columbus Catholic pitcher Hailey Zimmermann was able to get out of it without any further damage and finish off the victory.

Zimmermann struck out six, walked six and allowed seven hits, but the Dons’ offense was able to do even more damage to pull out the victory. Bangor pitcher Aliyah Langrehr walked eight and the Cardinals committed three errors.

Haley Van Wyhe had three hits, and Cierra Dieringer and Alyssa Rueth each had two, with Dieringer driving a pair of runs. Van Whye, Zimmermann, Rhya Dieringer and Rueth also added RBIs in the victory.
