GREENWOOD – Sully Whitford and Westen Schmitz combined on a two-hit shutout to lift Greenwood to a 6-0 win over Marshfield Columbus Catholic in a WIAA Division 4 baseball regional final Wednesday at Greenwood Elementary School.
Greenwood, winners of 11 games in a row, moves into a D-4 sectional semifinal against St. Thomas Aquinas/Lena (11-6) on Monday at Athens. The Indians (15-6) will play at 1 p.m. following the other semifinal between Edgar (17-3) and Three Lakes/Phelps (15-4). All four teams were No. 1 seeds in their respective regionals.
The two semifinal winners will play for a sectional title, and a berth in the WIAA state tournament, at 4 p.m.
Fletcher Bredlau had an RBI single in the first inning and Mason Learman knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice in the second to give Greenwood a 2-0 lead.
That was enough for Whitford, who struck out nine and allowed just two hits in six strong innings on the mound for the Indians.
Schmitz had a two-run single in the fourth and Greenwood plated two more in the fifth thanks to two hit batters and a bases-loaded walk.
Schmitz finished off the win pitching a scoreless seventh.
Cole Timmler had a double and Emmitt Konieczny a single to account for Columbus Catholic’s two hits. The Dons finish a solid season with a 13-10 record.
