LA CROSSE – Spencer and Auburndale had multiple athletes compete at the 2021 WIAA Division 3 State Track & Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Thursday.
Spencer junior Leah Zastrow earned a silver medal in the girls pole vault. Although she tied the state meet record with a vault of 11 feet, 9 inches, it wasn’t enough as Raegen Sorenson of Unity shattered the old mark with a vault of 12-3.
Zastrow, who won a sixth-place medal in the 100-meter hurdles at state two years ago as a freshman, finished 10th this year in 17.44 seconds.
Connor Clark, the lone Spencer boy to qualify for state, did not record a height in the pole vault.
Auburndale had one girl and one boy qualify in individual events, and three boys relay team also compete at state. None earned top-six state medals.
Aliah Hamus was 14th in the girls pole vault (8-6) and Terrance Cottrell-Roberson took 14th in the boys 100-meter preliminaries (11.89), failing to qualify for the finals.
The Auburndale 1,600-meter boys relay team of Parker Empey, Charles Jewell, Carl Lundgren and Gavin White Eagle finished eighth in 3:36.76, the top finish among the three Eagles’ relay teams.
Empey, Austin Quinlan, White Eagle and Cottrell-Roberson finished 11th in both the 400 relay (45.69) and 800 relay (1:34.95).
Among the other Central Wisconsin participants, the Edgar boys won three relay titles and Athens’ Caden Decker earned a gold medal in the boys pole vault (13-9).
Austin Dahlke, Konnor Wolf, Drew Guden and Kyle Brewster won the 400 relay in 43.44 seconds; Guden, Wolf, Ayden Weisenberger and Brewster took first in the 800 relay (1:31.06); and Kohlbe Weisenberger, Guden, Ayden Weisenberger and Dahlke won the 1,600 relay in 3:28.89.
Columbus Catholic’s Noah Eckelburg will compete in the wheelchair events on Friday, which will coincide with the Division 2 state meet. The Division 1 state meet, featuring Marshfield’s Wyatt LeMoine, Aubri Brown and Sophie Nikolay, will be Saturday.
