AUBURNDALE – In a limited schedule in 2020, the Auburndale High School football team gained some much-needed experience and hope to bring a positive energy into this year as it returns to 11-man football.
The Eagles went 3-0 last year due to a number of cancellations and a late switch to 8-man leaving them without a lot of options on their schedule.
Head coach Jay Anderson said the returning players and newcomers as well have been working hard toward Thursday’s season opener at Menominee Indian.
“We’re expecting to be competitive,” Anderson said. “We are still young with just four seniors, but we do return a lot of players with experience. Unfortunately, it is only three games of experience, but they were preparing and working hard all year last season”
Running back/defensive back Terrance Roberson is a two-way starter that is returning after averaging 9.4 yards per carry in his limited 2020 season.
Three-year starter Jesse Fowler is back on the offensive line, along with Adam Dorshorst, Sloan Welch and Mason Rachu, giving the Eagles a cohesive group up front in front of Roberson and quarterback Trayton Weber.
Receiver/linebacker Tim Schmitt, receiver/defensive back Alex Willfahrt, and receiver/defensive end Lucas Yeske also are back for Auburndale.
“We’ll need to stay healthy,” Anderson said. “Our depth isn’t where I would like it to be but the kids that we have are competitive and bright.”
