WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Cade Statz scored from 3 yards out with 44 seconds to go to lift the Assumption football team to a 22-18 win over Auburndale in a nonconference game Saturday at South Wood County Field.
Auburndale quarterback Trayton Weber threw touchdown passes of 11 yards to Alex Willfahrt and 15 yards to Tim Schmitt, and added a 3-yard touchdown run as the lead changed hands three times before Assumption’s final drive.
Reed Duellmann scored on a 3-yard run and caught a 56-yard touchdown pass from Jack Klatt in the second quarter as the Royals led 14-12 at halftime.
After Weber’s run put the Eagles back in front in the third quarter, neither team scored for nearly 17 minutes until Assumption grabbed the game-winner in the final minute.
Weber finished 12-for-22 for 185 yards passing as Schmitt hauled in five passes for 101 yards, and Wilfahrt had five catches for 71 yards for Auburndale (1-1).
Nick Leberg had 105 yards rushing and Klatt threw for 124 yards through the air for Assumption (1-1).
Auburndale will have a week off before playing a nonconference game at Pittsville on Sept. 10. Assumption will open its Central Wisconsin Conference Small Division schedule at home against Wild Rose on Friday. The game will be live at zaleskisports.com.
