STEVENS POINT – Stevens Point Pacelli scored on a penalty kick a little more than 3 minutes into the game. From there, it turned into the Alex Edwards show.
Edwards, a sophomore forward, scored five goals as Marshfield Columbus Catholic overcame that early deficit and defeated the Cardinals 6-2 in a Central Wisconsin Conference soccer game Monday at the Portage County Youth Soccer Fields.
Edwards scored at the 11:54 mark only to see Pacelli respond immediately as Jacob Hasler found the upper left corner of the net just seven seconds later and the Cardinals led 2-1.
Edwards took over from there, scoring unassisted goals 1½ minutes later and in the 37th minute put the Dons on top 3-2 at halftime.
Edwards added a goal 1:57 into the second half and his fifth 6½ minutes after that, the second on an assist from Charlie Moore.
Sammy Neville scored at the 49:54 mark to provide the final score for Columbus Catholic, which improves to 5-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the Central Wisconsin Conference.
Lucas Kreklau saves two of the four Pacelli shots on goal for the Dons.
Columbus Catholic hosts Wausau Newman Catholic in a CWC game Thursday at 5 p.m. at Griese Park. Pacelli (1-2-1 overall and CWC) is off until Sept. 20 when it plays at Gresham/Bowler.
