SPENCER – Amherst overcame a halftime deficit by scoring on its first three possessions of the second half and defeated Spencer/Columbus Catholic 36-14 in a Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division football game Friday night at Fritsch Field at Spencer High School.
Spencer/Columbus led 14-7 at halftime as Brock Bennington, who finished with an even 100 yards rushing, had scoring runs of 5 and 10 yards, the last coming with just 1:14 to go before halftime.
Amherst’s Landon Moe had a 13-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
The Falcons got the ball first in the second half and put together a methodical drive that took up nearly half of the third quarter. Moe hit Ian Hall for a 4-yard touchdown pass and Amherst tied the game at 14-14 with 6:13 to go in the period.
After Spencer/Columbus lost a fumble, the Falcons needed just three plays to score again when Matthew Glodowski dove in from the 1 and grabbed a 21-14 lead.
The Falcons forced a punt on SC’s next possession and after converting a third-and-20 pass for 40 yards from Moe to Hall, Glodowski eventually scored from the 6 with 1:39 left to put the game away.
On SC’s next play, Glodowski picked off a pass and ran it back 24 yards for another touchdown to provide the final score.
Glodowski finished with 122 yards rushing and Hall caught four passes for 73 yards, as Moe threw for 126 total.
“I was proud of our effort throughout the evening,” Spencer/Columbus coach Jason Gorst said. “We had a very good first half and were down a score with about three minutes to go when Amherst converted on 3rd and over 20. Things got away from us at the end. Nathan Rucker had a great evening blocking as a tight end, and Carson Kilty stepped up very well when he moved to guard. We are improving each week and need to continue to do so.”
Amherst hosts Weyauwega-Fremont and Spencer/Columbus will be home vs. Nekoosa in Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division action next Friday, Sept. 24. Both games will be live at zaleskisports.com.
