EDGAR – The Auburndale football team put itself in a position for a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter, but the Edgar defense had a different idea.

Karter Butt stepped in front of a Trayton Weber pass and two plays later Edgar scored the game-clinching touchdown in a 20-6 win over Auburndale on Saturday afternoon at Edgar High School.

Edgar led 6-0 at halftime after a Butt 13-yard touchdown run with 5:05 to go in the first quarter.

A pair of interceptions, by Ashton Schuett and Teagan Streit, kept the Auburndale offense scoreless.

The Eagles drove to the 15 midway through the second quarter before Streit’s pick near the goal line.

A 56-yard punt return by Everet Brehm set up Edgar’s second score, a 9-yard touchdown run by Brehm, and Edgar led 12-0 with 2:15 remaining in the third quarter.

Auburndale responded, with the help a pass interference penalty, and drove 69 yards in eight plays for its only score.

Weber connected with Tim Schmitt for a 14-yard pass to get the ball to the 6 and two Weber runs pushed it in the end zone to make it 12-6 a little more than two minutes into the fourth quarter.

After forcing an Edgar punt, the Eagles (4-2, 1-1 Marawood Conference) took over with 5:44 remaining with confidence high, but it was short-lived.

On Auburndale’s second play, Butt picked off Weber and returned it to the 11. Two plays later Brehm took a toss and ran 12 yards for a score.

Auburndale drove down to the 19 before being stopped on downs in the final minute.

Auburndale limited Edgar to just 153 total yards, all on the ground, but the three turnovers proved to be too much to overcome.

The Eagles host Marathon on Oct. 8, and with a win would set up a chance to tie for the Marawood Conference title should they win at Colby on Oct. 15. Edgar will be at Abbotsford for its regular-season finale on Oct. 8. The Wildcats do not have a game scheduled for Oct. 15.
