WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Marshfield freshman Rebecca Voss just missed finishing in the top 10 in her first WIAA State Cross Country Meet on Saturday, finishing 11th in the Division 1 girls race at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
Voss finished the 4-kilometer race in 14:56.30, 1.7 seconds behind Wausau East’s Ashley Eckhoff, to take 11th. The time was the fastest, by nearly 9 seconds, of any Marshfield girls runner at the state meet during coach Dan Akin’s long tenure at the school.
“Rebecca took it out pretty moderately and was 25th at the mile mark. From there she just steadily picked people off,” Akin said. “When you combine all three divisions, she finished 19th out of 490 runners, which will get her second-team all-state honors.
“At the end she was still coming on. It looked like she could run another half mile.”
Alexandria Fons, a freshman from Franklin, won the meet in 14:24.82, nearly 10 seconds ahead of Jenna McMiller of Waukesha North.
Wausau East repeated as the team champion. Katelyn Stine led the Lumberjacks with a fifth-place finish. Eckhoff was 10th and Courtney Frahm was 12th, 2 seconds behind Voss. Wausau West took fifth in the team standings.
“The conference girls really represented themselves well today,” Akin said. “West was second in sectional and ended up fifth overall – that says a lot about our league.”
Marshfield senior Bryan Zimmerman was just off his personal-best pace he set at the sectional meet last week and took 49th with a time of 16:57.16. It was just the second time in his career he broke the 17-minute mark.
Zimmerman was the first Marshfield boy to qualify for the state meet since 2006, and his time was the sixth-fastest for a Marshfield boy at state under Akin.
“The first mile pace was real moderate. The first guy came through at 5 minutes and Bryan was at 5:08 and in 25th place, so it was at a pace he could handle,” Akin said. “At the 2-mile he was 45th. There were so many guys (bunched), so he was right there. He showed guts in the last mile, and in the last 300 yards he caught about five guys.
“I was hoping he would break 17 minutes again, and he did, and for him to reach the top 50 was realistic for him. To get top 50 was huge.”
Dan Schubert of Appleton East won the meet with a time of 15:53.71.
Wisconsin Valley Conference representatives Stevens Point and D.C. Everest finished seventh and 12th, respectively, as a team.
Jon Formella led Stevens Point, taking 24th in 16:32.36.
Hartland Arrowhead edged Milwaukee Marquette by just one point to claim the team title.
