WEYAUWEGA – The Auburndale boys team, and three individual runners are off to state after competition at the WIAA Division 3 cross county sectional on Saturday at Weyauwega-Fremont High School.
The Pacelli boys won the sectional title with 59 points, with Auburndale second with 93 to advance as a team to the 2021 WIAA State Cross Country Championships next Saturday, Oct. 30, at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
Weyauwega-Fremont was first with 56 points and Wisconsin Rapids Assumption second with 59 in the girls standings to also advance.
The top two teams and top five individuals not on those teams move on to the state meet. The Division 3 boys race will be at 1:10 p.m. and the girls race will be at 3:05 p.m.
Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s Andrew Scheer won the boys race in 17:13.69 and his brother Isaac Scheer was fifth in 17:33.91 to earn two of the extra qualifying spots.
Adam Eiden of Pacelli finished second in the boys race in 17:20.19 to lead the Cardinals, which also had top-10 finishes from Gage Hoerter, who was seventh in 17:53.11 and Sam Carpenter, who took 10th in 18:09.80.
Charles Jewell finished ninth (18:05.85), Mason White Eagle took 12th (18:12.75) and Ian Grosskopf was 17th (18:24.67) to lead Auburndale to the state meet.
Abby Bartel of Weyauwega-Fremont won the girls race in 19:16.53 and Assumption’s Ainara Sainz de Rozas was second in 19:49.21 to lead their respective teams to state.
Auburndale’s Jordyn Karl took fifth in 20:22.65 and Sophia Bablitsch of Rosholt was seventh in 20:27.76 to earn two individual berths for the girls.
Others went to Molly Duel of Laconia, who was third in 20:13.93, Lauren Ripley of Neenah St. Mary Catholic, who took fourth in 20:18.79, and Westfield’s Haddie Showen, who was sixth in 20:26.74.
Auburndale also had a top-10 finish from Mckenna Zieher, who was eighth in 20:53.35.
Grace Dolan was 11th (21:40.43), Clara Kubis 13th (21:43.25) and Maddie Meinel 15th (22:05.94) to help Assumption to second in the team standings.
Malachai Anderson took 71st (20:53.67) for the Spencer boys, and Emily Wehrman was 68th (26;23.74) for the Spencer girls.
