Auburndale girls basketball outlasts Marathon to win season opener

AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale girls basketball team made 12 of 16 free throw attempts in the second half to help pull out a 55-50 win over Marathon in the Marawood Conference South Division opener for both teams on Thursday night at Auburndale High School.

Annamarie Aue poured in 26 points for the Eagles.

Auburndale finished 20-for-29 from the free throw line, while Marathon couldn’t cash in, making just 14 of 32 from the charity stripe in a game that saw 45 fouls called.

Samantha Stanton added 10 points and Ashlyn Grimm had nine for Auburndale.

Kali Prihoda scored 13 points and Allison Wokatsch added 11 for Marathon (1-1 overall).

Both teams return to action Tuesday with Marawood South games. Marathon will be at Edgar and Auburndale will host Stratford.
