ALBION, Mich. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team, which features nine area players and five Marshfield High School graduates, rolled to a 58-23 win over Albion College (Mich.) on Saturday at Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium in the opening round of the NCAA Division III football playoffs.
With the win, the Eagles (9-2) advance to the second round, where they will meet North Central (Ill.) on Saturday, Nov. 27, at Naperville, Ill. The Cardinals were the top-ranked team in the latest d3football.com national poll and are the defending national champions.
UW-La Crosse is making its first national playoff appearance since 2006.
La Crosse rolled out to a 27-0 lead on touchdown passes from Jakob Parks to Cameron Sorenseon and Dustin Schultz, and TD runs by Joey Stutzman and Parks.
Parks threw another touchdown pass to Jake Simuncak in the final seconds of the first half as the Eagles took a 34-3 lead into halftime.
Parks wasn’t done, throwing two more scores to Sorenson, and finished 24-for-30 for 285 yards and the five scores. Stutzman added 136 yards rushing and Marshfield native Brant Bohman added 70 yards on the ground on 16 carries.
In addition to Bohman, Marshfield High School graduates Connor Berry, a senior offensive lineman, sophomore wide receiver Caden Pearce, sophomore punter Ryan Krueger, and freshman wide receiver Wyatt LeMoine are also on the Eagles’ roster this season.
Sophomore defensive lineman Jack Kelly, a starter, and freshman defensive lineman Zach Zsido of Stevens Point, sophomore offensive lineman Wyatt Fowler of Auburndale, and freshman Austen Humke offensive lineman of Greenwood are also on La Crosse’s roster.
