Wisconsin Rapids storms back to beat Marshfield in WVC boys hockey opener

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Wisconsin Rapids overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat Marshfield 5-3 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference boys hockey opener on Thursday at the South Wood County Rec Center.

Marshfield pulled out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Noah Peterson and Sawyer Schindler before Rapids responded with five unanswered goals – two on power plays and one short-handed – to snag the victory.

Carson Gunderson scored midway through the second period to get the Raiders on the board before they ripped off four goals in the third period to pull away.

Josh DeKarske, Carsen Gause, Trevor Vilbaum and Sawyer Wilkens scored in the run for Wisconsin Rapids, which is now 2-0 overall this season.

Peterson scored in the final minute for the Tigers (3-2).

Wisconsin Rapids will play at Eau Claire Regis/Altoona/Chippewa Falls McDonell on Saturday in Altoona. Marshfield is back in action Tuesday at home against Merrill/Wausau East live on zaleskisports.com at 7 p.m.
