Auburndale girls basketball outlasts Columbus Catholic to remain unbeaten

MARSHFIELD – The Auburndale girls basketball team remained undefeated after recovering from a late rally to defeat Marshfield Columbus Catholic 47-43 in a nonconference game Monday at Columbus Catholic High School.

Auburndale led 23-17 at halftime and 32-23 with 12 minutes remaining before the Dons inched closer.

Columbus used an 11-0 run to take a two-point lead before Auburndale responded with eight-straight points, going ahead 40-34, and never trailed again.

The Dons closed to within 44-43 with a minute left, but Auburndale made three free throws and held Columbus scoreless the rest of the way.

Annamarie Aue scored 13 points, Aliah Hamus had 11 and Josie Ertl chipped in 10 for the Eagles, who are now 6-0 this season.

Maggie Callaghan scored all of her team-high nine points in the second half for the Dons, who fall to 4-3.

Both teams return to their respective conference schedules on Thursday with home games. Auburndale will host Wisconsin Rapids Assumption in a Marawood Conference South Division, and Columbus Catholic will be at home against Gilman for a Cloverbelt Conference East Division contest. Both games begin at 7:15 p.m. and will be live-streamed at zaleskisports.com.
