AUBURNDALE – Second- and even third-chance opportunities were abundant for the Stratford boys basketball team in its Marawood Conference South Division matchup with Auburndale on Tuesday.

The Tigers had 21 offensive rebounds leading to 17 second-chance points as they overcame a rough shooting night to defeat Auburndale 52-36 at Auburndale High School.

Kaden Griesmer finished with 10 points and 16 rebounds, 11 on the offensive end, to help Stratford remain undefeated at 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the Marawood South.

Neither team made a basket from the field in the first 4½ minutes of the game, a sign of things to come as both struggled on the offensive end.

Stratford used a 16-3 run, started by back-to-back 3-pointers from Braeden Schueller and a three-point play by Griesmer, to take a 17-9 lead.

Auburndale responded with eight-straight points to tie it at 17-17 after a basket by Mason White Eagle and the teams went into halftime tied at 20-20 both shooting under 30 percent.

Stratford had 10 offensive rebounds in the first half, but only converted that into six points. The tone changed in the second half as the Tigers were more opportunistic with their extra chances.

Schueller’s fourth 3-pointer of the game put Stratford up 35-29 before Austin Quinlan came back with one of his own from long range for Auburndale with 9:15 to go. From there, it was all Tigers.

Schueller scored to start a 12-2 run, and after Auburndale ended that spurt, it would not score again in the final 2:50 as the Tigers closed out the game scoring the final five points.

The Tigers had 11 offensive rebounds in the second half leading to 11 second-chance points, while Auburndale shot just 7-for-21 and finished 12-for-39.

Schueller finished with a game-high 14 points, and Devin Ulrich added 10 for Stratford.

Mason White Eagle had nine points for Auburndale, which drops to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Both teams return to Marawood South action Friday with Stratford traveling to Marathon and Auburndale heading to Wausau to take on Newman Catholic. The Auburndale-Newman game will be live on zaleskisports.com at 7:15 p.m.
