WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Assumption girls basketball team jumped out to a commanding lead in the first half and held off Stratford, winning 57-37 in a Marawood Conference South Division matchup Thursday at Assumption High School.
Assumption led 32-8 at halftime, limiting the Tigers to just four made baskets in the opening half.
Stratford outscored the Royals by four in the second half, but it wasn’t nearly enough.
Assumption is now 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the Marawood South, remaining one-half game behind Auburndale for the conference lead. Stratford drops to 8-7 and 4-4 in the conference.
Sarah Shaw scored 16 points and Ainara Sainz de Rozas added 11 for Assumption.
Lauren Kraus scored 17 points and Kalyn Schueller added 12 as they accounted for 14 of Stratford’s 16 made field goals.
Assumption will play a nonconference game against Shullsburg on Saturday at Just-A-Game Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells before playing a Marawood South game at Wausau Newman Catholic on Tuesday.
Stratford will host Auburndale in a Marawood South game Tuesday. The game will be live at zaleskisports.com.
