MARSHFIELD – D.C. Everest put up 105 points in a win against Wausau West on Tuesday. First-place Marshfield wasn’t going to let that happen to them.
The Tigers locked down D.C. Everest, holding them to 29 percent shooting and never trailed, rolling to a 64-46 victory on Friday night at the Chips Hamburgers Fieldhouse at Marshfield High School.
Following an 0-3 start, Marshfield has won 10 of 11 to improve to 11-4 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.
A four-point play by Chase Hinson, two baskets from Carson Kvernen and five points from Gavin Fravert helped Marshfield build a 21-10 lead as D.C. Everest started 2-for-19 from the field.
Junior Marcus Neve provided a spark off the bench for Marshfield over the final eight minutes of the half. He scored the final four points to give Marshfield a 27-18 lead at the break, and had countless hustle plays chasing down loose balls, grabbing rebounds, and creating extra opportunities for the Tigers.
“The energy he plays with is contagious,” Marshfield coach Chris Fischer said of Neve. “The way he guarded Marcus Hall gave him fits. Chase Hinson did a good job on Hall early, but to be able to bring in Marcus Neve and start to fly around the court and he really bothered people. He has a different dynamic. There’s not a lot of players in this area that has a skill set that Marcus has. I’m really happy for him, he’s working hard.”
Marshfield’s lead hung between seven and 12 points before a 6-0 run led by a basket and two free throws from Brooks Hinson helped push the Tigers’ advantage to 49-33 with 9½ minutes to go. Marshfield led by at least 14 the rest of the way.
Kvernen had 13 points and nine rebounds, Fravert finished with 12 points, Chase Hinson added 11, Luke LeMoine scored 10, Brooks Hinson had nine, and Neve finished with seven points and nine rebounds in the win for Marshfield.
Marcus Hall, who scored 44 points in Everest’s win on Tuesday against West, was held to 3-for-12 shooting and finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Cohen Priebe added 12 points for the Evergreens (6-10, 5-3 Wisconsin Valley Conference).
“We handled their full-court pressure very well,” Fischer said. “We have a great group, a great collection of 15 players, five coaches and a student assistant coach that have spent a lot of time together and put a lot of work in collectively. Last year when we were going through our struggles, losses, we talked about continuing to work hard because you never know when those pay-offs will show up. If you continue to put in the time, they will, and we are starting to see some of those benefits.”
