WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Stevens Point wrapped up the Wisconsin Valley Conference championship with a first-place finish at the WVC Boys Swim Meet on Thursday at Lincoln High School.
Combined with its 8-0 record during the regular-season dual meets, Stevens Point earned the overall title after winning the conference meet with 412 points and six individual champions.
Marshfield finished second with 320 points and was followed by D.C. Everest (203), Wisconsin Rapids (183) and Wausau East (130).
D.C. Everest’s David Mayer set a pair of conference meet records and was named the WVC Swimmer of the Year. He set a new mark in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.16 and the 500 freestyle in 4:46.03 to win each event.
Stevens Point’s Cade Casey also set a new meet record in the 100 backstroke, winning the event in 54.09 seconds.
Other victories for Stevens Point came from the 200 medley relay team of Casey, Kyle Franz, Will Gargulak and Keegan McKinley-Chapin (1:44.46), Gargulak in the 200 individual medley (2:12.06) and the 100 butterfly (55.78), Franz in the 100 breastroke (1:06.69), and the 400 freestyle relay team of Casey, Gargulak, Frank and Konnor Pilger (3:25.77).
D.C. Everest won the other five races. In addition to Mayer’s two wins, Camden Barwick won the 50 freestyle (22.48) and the 100 freestyle (49.59), and the 200 freestyle relay team of Keaton Barwick, Camden Barwick, Adam Swedlund and Mayer was first in 1:33.37.
Marshfield had three second-place finishes. Kyle Berres was second in the 100 freestyle (50.56), Simon Dagit was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.81), and the 200 freestyle relay team of Dagit, Henry Hilbelink, Graham Lonsdale and Berres was second in 1:35.68.
Lonsdale also finished third in the 200 freestyle (1:58.11) and 500 freestyle (5:32.30), Berres was third in the 50 freestyle (22.94), Hilbelink took third in the 200 IM (2:26.40), and the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays teams also placed third for the Tigers.
Shaun Hunter won the diving competition, which was not officially scored in the team results, with a total score of 188.10 points, and Ryan Grassman took second with 111.45 for Marshfield.
D.C. Everest’s Garrett Rochetto was named Coach of the Year.
