MARSHFIELD – A night after clinching a Wisconsin Valley Conference championship, the Marshfield boys basketball team showed no signs of let-up.
The Tigers pulled ahead to stay midway through the first half and cruised to a 70-45 nonconference win over Holmen on Friday night at the Chips Hamburgers Fieldhouse at Marshfield High School.
Holmen jumped out to an 11-5 lead as Marshfield started 2-for-7 from the field, but the Tigers regrouped and used an 13-2 to pull ahead.
A 3-pointer by Brooks Hinson, one of four the freshman guard made in the game, gave Marshfield a 19-16 lead with 9:22 to go in the half and the Tigers never trailed again.
Marshfield led 34-24 at halftime and opened it up in the second half, making 14 of 21 field goals and 7 of 8 from 3-point range to build its lead to 25 as it was able to empty its bench.
The dominant 36-21 second half allowed Marshfield to empty its bench and give major minutes to some players that don’t get the chance very often.
“We have some really deserving players to don’t get a lot of minutes that work their tails off in practice,” Marshfield coach Chris Fischer said. “The results of basketball and athletics is so public. Everybody just sees the work you put out the 22 games of the year, but our guys are getting a lot better in practice every day. I was happy to see some of those guys that haven’t got a lot of minutes, to see some success on the floor tonight.”
Brooks Hinson finished with 19 points and Gavin Fravert added 15 for the Tigers, who improve to 15-5 overall after winning for the 15th time in its last 16 games.
Reid Tenglad had 14 points to lead Holmen (6-14).
Marshfield returns to action Tuesday for a home nonconference game against Rhinelander. The game will be broadcast live at zaleskisports.com.
