HAYWARD – Maddox Achtor scored a power play goal 3:53 into the second overtime period to give Hayward a 4-3 win over Marshfield in a WIAA Division 2 boys hockey regional final Thursday at the Hayward Sports Center.
Fourth-seeded Hayward (10-13-1) moves on to a sectional semifinal at No. 1 seed Rice Lake (13-7) on Thursday, Feb. 24. Marshfield finishes its season with an 11-12-1 record.
Marshfield fought back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 to force overtime.
Graydon Anderson scored midway through the second period to bring the Tigers to within 2-1, and after a Hayward goal by Sam Schmidt, Sawyer Schindler scored in the final minute of the period.
Schindler added another goal 56 seconds into the third period to tie the game and it remained that way until the second overtime when Hayward was able to finish off the victory.
Cole Halvorsen had 16 saves in goal for the Tigers, who outshot Hayward 57-20.
