PORT EDWARDS – The No. 13 seed Spencer boys basketball team pulled off its second consecutive road upset in the WIAA playoffs as it routed Port Edwards 70-49 in a Division 5 regional semifinal Friday night at John Edwards High School.
Spencer led 34-32 at halftime before outscoring the No. 5 seed Port Edwards 36-17 in a dominating second-half performance.
The Rockets (9-17) move on to a Division 5 regional final at No. 1 seed Wausau Newman Catholic (19-7) on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live at zaleskisports.com.
Kaleb Brandt made six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 24 points for Spencer, which made 10 3-pointers in all. Caleb Rucker added three 3s and nine points in the victory.
Spencer also held Port Edwards top scorer Nate Gibbs to zero points.
Brynden Beck had 17 points and Erik Mock had 15 for the Blackhawks, who finish the season with a 16-10 record.
