MARSHFIELD – Two early goals by Wisconsin Rapids held up as the Raiders handed the Marshfield girls soccer team its first Wisconsin Valley Conference loss of the season, 2-1 on Tuesday night at Heiting Community Stadium.
Kate Schaeffer scored in the 12th minute and Ella Bruns added a goal in the 25th minute to give the Raiders (2-1-1, 2-0 WVC) a quick 2-0 lead.
Marshfield regrouped defensively, not allowing another score, but couldn’t muster much of an offensive attack as it was limited to just eight shots on goal.
Abby Ongna scored on a penalty kick in the second half for the Tigers, but that was all they could do against Wisconsin Rapids goalie Chelsea King, who made six saves.
Ava Sainterme had 15 saves in goal for Marshfield, which drops to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the WVC.

“At halftime there was plenty of discussion of team responsibilities, and to maintain marks and have better communication to contain the opponent,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “Rapids is a nice team and the reigning conference champs, and we need to play faster and with better purpose. We have not seen any previous teams this year with the speed and ability Rapids had all around. This will serve as motivation to work harder in practice as we know we are right there.”
Marshfield will play at Wausau West on Thursday and will host Eau Claire North on Friday. Friday’s game will be broadcast live at zaleskisports.com starting at 7 p.m.
