Athens strikes early, knocks off Columbus Catholic softball

ATHENS – Athens scored three times in the first inning and went on to a 5-2 win over Marshfield Columbus Catholic in a nonconference softball game Wednesday at Athens High School.

Sierra Hart struck out eight in a complete-game win for Athens, which remains undefeated at 6-0 this season.

Hailey Zimmermann suffered the loss, giving up three walks with eight strikeouts, in a complete game for Columbus Catholic (1-5).

Sophia Coker had two hits and an RBI, and Jazelle Hartwig had an RBI double for Athens.

Sam Casperson and Zimmermann each had two hits for Columbus Catholic.

Columbus Catholic will play a Cloverbelt Conference East Division game at Spencer. Athens is off until Friday when it hosts Marathon in a nonconference game.
