MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls soccer team evened its record in the Wisconsin Valley Conference with a 4-0 shutout of Stevens Point on Tuesday at Heiting Community Stadium.

Grace Taylor scored midway through the first half, and Abby Ongna, Avery Weister and Presley Franklin added goals in the second half for Marshfield, which is now 6-5 overall and 3-3 in the Valley.

Marshfield held Stevens Point to just one shot on goal, which was saved by goalie Ella Allar. This was Marshfield’s fifth shutout win this season.

This was the 100th career win for Marshfield head coach Steve Lindner.

“Again, Sophia Gruenling led the way on defense playing sweeper,” Lindner said. “Her smart plays and super play in the back really pulls players together.

“We had two starting midfielders out with injury, and with the starting keeper and center back all out the rest of the team has stepped up nicely. (Assistant) Coach Jeff Molter and I have talked about the strength of our team being so deep and players able to step in and play as needed. Another example was Mia Preston, stepping into defensive mid and playing a steady game.”

Marshfield plays at Merrill and Stevens Point will travel to Appleton West for games on Thursday.
