MERRILL – Abby Ongna scored midway through the second half to lift the Marshfield girls soccer team to a 1-0 win over Merrill on Thursday at Merrill High School.
Ongna scored off a corner kick from Lauryn Katzenberger 16:07 into the second half for the only goal of the game.
“It was a super play with the volley right off the corner,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “We have stressed the desire to get more corners and limit them for the opponents. We have done a great job getting the corners and limiting them as we had a great advantage of 9-1 on corners last night.
“The defense was its stellar self, but we need to still tweak a few items that we look to improve upon to be a top-notch defense. The defense is led by Sophia Gruenling with Devin Miller, Samantha Kilty, Cassie Langfoss, Mia Preston, Serenity Paisly and Kailyn Kurth contributing. We have a nice rotation and look to each to do their part.”
Marshfield improves to 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. The Tigers will play Superior and Chippewa Falls at Wausau West on Saturday.
