MARSHFIELD – Marshfield Columbus Catholic scored three times in the bottom of the first inning and that was all it needed as Emmitt Konieczny tossed a complete-game shutout and the Dons beat Neillsville 3-0 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division baseball game Friday at Jack Hackman Field.
Brock Bennington and Grant Olson had RBIs in the opening inning as the Dons opened up a 3-0 lead in the first. Konieczny did the rest.
The sophomore pitcher struck out six, walked just one and allowed only four hits to earn the win and keep Columbus Catholic’s perfect season intact as it improves to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the Cloverbelt East.
Neillsville pitchers Bryce Erickson and Sam Hayes only allowed three hits, but the three unearned runs in the opening frame saddled Erickson with the loss. The Warriors are now 1-6 and 1-5 in conference play.
Neillsville plays at Owen-Withee on Monday and hosts Spencer on Tuesday. Columbus Catholic will be at the Westby Triangular on Saturday, competing against the host school and Fennimore, and then travels to Owen-Withee on Tuesday.
