STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield softball team scored four times in the first inning and held on from there, defeating Stevens Point 5-2 on Tuesday at Woyak Park to complete a season-sweep of the Panthers.
Marshfield improves to 13-3 overall and remains undefeated in the Valley at 8-0. Stevens Point is now 12-3 overall and 6-3 in the conference, tied with Wisconsin Rapids for second place.
The Tigers will need one win in their final four conference games to earn a tie for the conference title, and with two wins they would win their first outright WVC championship since 1997. Marshfield tied for the title in 1998, the last time it finished in first place in the conference.
Courtney Donahue had an RBI double, and Sandy Costa and Raina Manlick had RBI singles to help Marshfield build a 4-0 lead before SPASH even hit.
The Panthers cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the third with the help of an error and a double by Zoe Fink, but that would be all they would get against Donahue, the Marshfield hurler.
Donahue struck out eight, walked two and scattered seven hits to pick up the victory.
Marshfield added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as Madalen Bornbach led off the frame with a home run.
Marshfield will play at Wausau East on Thursday before hosting a split doubleheader Friday against Wisconsin Rapids at 4 p.m. and Mosinee at 6 p.m. Both of Friday’s games will be broadcast live at zaleskisports.com.
