Two late runs push Edgar past Stratford softball

STRATFORD – Edgar plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning out outlast Stratford 3-1 in a Marawood Conference South Division softball game Thursday at Hilgemann Field.

In the second-straight pitchers’ duel this week between Edgar’s Mikayla Wirkus and Stratford’s Laney Pankratz, Wirkus again got the best of her counterpart, allowing just a first-inning run, one walk and four hits while striking out 12.

Wirkus struck out 11 in a 2-1 win over the Tigers on Tuesday.

Pankratz suffered the loss, striking out two and scattering seven hits for the Tigers.

Maycie Yonker had a double and two RBI, and Wirkus added a pair of hits for Edgar, which improves to 9-6 overall and clinches a second-place finish in the Marawood South, finishing at 8-2.

Tessa Berg had two hits and scored Stratford’s lone run. The Tigers fall to 7-9 and 2-7 in conference play.

Stratford plays a nonconference game at Rib Lake on Friday before finishing its Marawood South schedule at home against Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Tuesday.

Edgar will travel to Park Falls for a nonconference game against Chequamegon on Friday.
