WAUSAU – The Marshfield softball team earned at least a share of its first Wisconsin Valley Conference championship since 1998 with an 18-5 rout of Wausau East on Thursday at East High School.
Loryn Jakobi went 6-for-6 with five singles, a triple and three RBI for the Tigers, who cracked out 23 hits in the win as they improve to 14-3 overall and remain perfect at 9-0 in the WVC.
Marshfield hosts Wisconsin Rapids at 4 p.m. Friday at Madison Field, and with a win would clinch the first outright conference title for the program since 1997. The Tigers will play a nonconference game against Mosinee following the matchup with Rapids in a split doubleheader. Both games will be broadcast on zaleskisports.com.
Marshfield scored seven times in the top of the first inning, but East responded with five unearned runs in the bottom of the frame against Tigers’ pitcher Courtney Donahue.
Donahue settled in from there, shutting down the Lumberjacks over the next four innings. Sandy Costa tossed two shutout innings to finish off the win for Marshfield.
Brooklyn Bohman had four hits and two RBI, Costa finished with four hits and four RBI, and Donahue had three hits and three RBI in the dominating offensive performance for the Tigers.
Savannah Spees had two hits, and Jess Nardi and Emma Pagel each drove in two runs for Wausau East (1-12, 1-10 WVC). East will host Wittenberg-Birnamwood for a nonconference game Saturday at 11 a.m.
