MERRILL – The Wausau Post 10 Junior Legion baseball team earned a spot in the state tournament after defeating Marshfield Post 54 5-2 in the championship game of the U-17 American Legion baseball regional tournament on Monday night at Athletic Park.
Wausau advances to the U-17 state tournament, which will be held Friday through Monday at Memorial Park in Plover.
Marshfield won four consecutive elimination games, which included a 14-4 victory over Wisconsin Rapids on Monday, to reach the championship game. The Junior Devils finish the season with a 17-16 record.
Wausau took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning before Marshfield rallied to tie the game in the fifth.
Owen Griesbach had an RBI triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jack Tubbs to tie the game for the Devils.
The score held until the bottom of the sixth when Wausau struck for three runs fueled by two walks and a hit batter.
Marshfield was only able to get one runner on board in the top of the seventh before the final out.
The Junior Devils only had three hits in the game, two from Griesbach.
Ian Brown suffered the pitching loss, allowing the three runs in the sixth. Brady Schmidt started, striking out five in 3 1/3 innings.
In the win over Wisconsin Rapids, Marshfield took a 5-2 lead with a four-run fifth inning, and blew it open with eight runs in the top of the seventh.
Chase Robinson went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI, Brown was 3-for-5 with a grand slam home run in that big seventh inning and had six RBI overall, and Tubbs was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Devils.
Aden Cherney and Cy Becker added two RBI each for Marshfield.
Vance Kielman tossed a complete game, striking out three without a walk, to earn the win for Marshfield.
