VIROQUA – Paige Johnson had a hat trick, with Katie Wendlandt assisting on all three goals, to lead the Marshfield girls hockey team to a 6-0 win over Viroqua in its season opener Tuesday night.

Abbey Besler, Tori Esser and Johnson each scored in the first period to get Marshfield’s offense rolling.

Kate Schumitsch added an unassisted goal in the second period before Johnson finished off the win with a pair of scores in the third.

Marshfield had 60 shots on goal.

“The girls played in excellent game of hockey,” Marshfield coach Nate Sparbel said. “They worked very hard for the six goals they scored, nothing was given to them.

“Viroqua had some talented players and could have easily turned this game
around at any point if we would have let up.”

Marshfield went 3-for-3 on the power play and got 11 saves for goalie Ashley Bauer.

Viroqua goalie Julia Bruggen had 54 saves.

The Tigers play at Beaver Dam on Saturday.
