MARSHFIELD – There’s nothing anyone can do about the weather, and unfortunately the Stratford and Mosinee football teams found that out on Friday night.

A lightning delay just before the start of the fourth quarter quickly turned into a cancellation and the opening game of the 2022 season for both teams ended in a 20-20 tie at Heiting Community Stadium.

The matchup featured the passing attack of Mosinee against the power-running game of Stratford and both were successful.

Mosinee receiver Keagen Jirschele took a bubble screen 75 yards from quarterback Gavin Obremski for a score on the Indians’ first possession.

Stratford countered with Koehler Kilty running six-straight plays, accounting for all 80 yards, and scored from the 7, but the Tigers botched the extra point attempt and trailed 7-6.

Obremski connected with Davin Stoffel for a 51-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter to put the Indians up 14-6, which held until halftime after Stratford fumbled on the Mosinee 34 late in the half.

Stratford scored on both of its possessions in the second half. As Kilty fought off some cramps, Conner Weigel carried three times for 17 yards and Kilty returned to go the final 20 on the drive, scoring from the 4. He also added a two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14.

Kilty made his mark on defense as well, picking off an Obremski pass and then ran three times for 34 yards down to the 1 where quarterback Braeden Schueller punched it in to give the Tigers their first lead at 20-14.

Mosinee quickly came back, going 68 yards in just five plays. Obremski finished off the drive with a 35-yard touchdown run and after a missed kick, the game was tied again at 20-20 with 40 seconds to go in the third quarter.

Stratford ran one play before the end of the quarter and before the start of the fourth, lightning began to flash in the south sky and the game was halted. About one-half hour later the game was officially cancelled, ending in a tie.

Kilty finished with 209 yards rushing on 24 carries as the Tigers racked up 268 total on the ground.

Obremski was efficient, completing 14 of 20 for 244 yards, with Jirschele leading the way with six catches for 134 yards.

Stratford will play a nonconference game at Edgar and Mosinee will play Racine St. Catherine’s in Lomira next Friday, Aug. 26.
